“ Garden at Vétheuil » by Claude Monet
Oil on canvas, 40/50 cm, 2024
I created this study of Monet’s garden at Vétheuil to immerse myself in the impressionist approach and better understand, through practice, how Monet built his compositions using thick dynamique brushstrokes, light, and pure color.
Copying this work allowed me to focus on direct observation of color masses, without relying on traditional drawing techniques. The challenge was to let the form emerge through the brushwork, to suggest rather than define, and to trust the eye. Every leaf, every shadow becomes a vibration of tone, a play of optical contrasts.
It also taught me to keep the canvas breathing despite the richness of detail. It’s a true school of seeing and freedom, one that encourages simplification without losing substance.
