Lacs de la Tempête. Evgeniia Bychina, painter

Lacs de la Tempête

Oil on canvas, 40/50 cm, 2024

This painting represents a section of the Lacs de la Tempête, a chain of alpine lakes nestled in Savoie, France. As an experienced hiker, I remember how powerfully this place resonated with me, no photograph could ever capture the stillness, the light, the sense of altitude and vastness I felt that day.

I wanted to convey that precise moment when summer begins to yield to autumn: the sun is still warm but the landscape is already shifting. Patches of green grass fade into ochre and burnt orange; the alpine shrubs are tinged with reds and purples. This transition, subtle but undeniable, was the heart of the scene for me.

Painting it meant paying close attention to rhythm and texture — the mineral geometry of the mountains, the fluid curves of the lakes, the scattered brushstrokes suggesting vegetation in movement. I tried to evoke the sensation of this vibrant air and this quiet solitude of high-altitude spaces.
